Churchyards and Cemetery
The churchyards at both our churches are regularly maintained and provide peaceful, nature-filled sanctuaries for visiting graves or quiet escape. At All Saints, Wakes Colne, beyond the memorial lychgate there are elegant, ancient trees including tall limes and ancient yews between the many gravestones and family memorials. At Chappel the grass lawn looks directly over the beautiful Colne Valley and nearby Chappel viaduct, whilst ancient gravestones line the boundary walls to the rear of the church. On the road to Swan Street, a short distance above Chappel church, is the village cemetery, where you will find more recent Chappel graves and our memorial to Chappel village fallen from both World Wars. There are good records for the graves at All Saints Wakes Colne and the Chappel cemetery. The PCC will be pleased to answer any historical enquiries so far as we are able. Enquiries regarding burials should please be addressed to our Churchwardens, Christine Maskell for Chappel church and Nigel Impey for Wakes Colne church - please see Contacts for details.
In keeping with maintaining beauty and tidiness in our churchyards, our churches and the cemetery adhere to the regulations and directions regarding gravestones and memorial decoration provided by the Diocese of Chelmsford - please refer to the Diocese of Chelmsford Churchyard Handbook. If in doubt or for clarification please contact the Churchwardens.
